WiMAX FAQs part two

WiMAX is a complex technology, and with intricate technologies, there are a number of terms and new ideas that can be confusing. In an attempt to delve deeper than our first post, we’ve provided a second round of WiMAX frequently asked questions.What kind of safety can I expect from WiMAX?WiMAX devices are extremely safe. The safety each device exhibits can be attributed to the WiMAX standard (otherwise known as the IEEE 802.16 standard). The safety of the products is supported by the technology used within this standard (which is widely deployed). What is the WiMAX Forum?

When talking about WiMAX, one organization that receives frequent mention is the WiMAX Forum. But who are they and what do they do?The WiMAX Forum is a non-profit organization which began in June of 2001. The group is most infamous for developing the “WiMAX” name. However, the organization’s primary purpose is to work with broadband wireless products. Most frequently, the Forum works towards the harmonized IEEE 802.16/ETSI HiperMAN standard. This means, the organization promotes and certifies the interoperability and compatibility of wireless devices to meet this standard. Read more »

Wi-Fi vs. WiMax

While Wi-Fi and WiMAX both refer to internet access and wireless connections, the two aren’t the same technology. Here are just a few of the ways you’ll find that Wi-Fi and WiMAX are different, and at times, complementary.

  • Wi-Fi employs an unlicensed spectrum to give users access to a local network. However, WiMAX may use an unlicensed or licensed spectrum to connect individuals to the internet. This is partly because WiMAX is a long range system (which means it reaches several kilometers). Read more »
